They say that a person’s home is their castle. That’s a great way of looking at things. Unfortunately though, castles don’t take care of themselves. As with anything worth having, your home will require upkeep and even improvements from time to time. Sure, you can hire someone to do everything for you, but there is nothing more satisfying than being able to look after your home on your own. To do this, you need the right set of tools.

It is a noble aspiration to desire to become proficient with many different kinds of tools. Repairing broken things around the house or even carrying out larger home improvement projects, or possibly building furniture from scratch, may seem like a daunting idea for someone who did not grow up doing it, but it is certainly possible to develop the skill. All it takes is the desire to do so, a little elbow grease, and a collection of the right tools for the job. But what exactly do you need in your garage? What should everyone have available to them just waiting to be thrown into use?

The answer to this question depends on exactly what it is that you have in mind. The needs of someone who just wants to be able to fix wobbly table legs and properly put a nail into a wall will differ greatly from what would be required for renovating your bathroom or building yourself a bookshelf over the weekend. But there are certain things that no home owner should ever be without. Here is a list of the necessities that you need to own -

Hammer – In short, get yourself one. It is one of the absolute essentials, as it is useful for such a wide variety of tasks. You will need one for everything from hanging pictures to the more exciting endeavor of building additions to your house.

Screwdriver – You need an entire set, consisting of varying sizes. Screws come in many different sizes, so should your screwdriver.

Crowbar – You never know when you might need one. It’s a great cure for jammed doors or windows.

Tape Measure – Indispensable for measuring everything from the dimensions of your room in preparation for furniture shopping, to getting exact measurement for a piece of wood destined to be the first victim in a building frenzy.

Wrench – You will need to work on pipes at some point. This is how you will get them open.

Pliers – Great for getting a tight grip on just about anything.

Tool Box – It is important to keep everything in order so that your tools are easy to find when you need them.

This is a very basic list of things that you will need in order to properly prepare yourself for basic tasks around the house. If you have any desire to push the envelope a bit further than this, there are many more things you can get for your arsenal. Some of them will even help with simple tasks. An electric drill, for instance, is great for screwing things into a wall without having to force the screws in by hand.

Aside from that, there are many other power tools that you can have at the ready. Just a few that you may want to look into if larger projects are on the horizon for you are the circular saw, drill press, and electric sander. All of which can be extremely helpful for the avid craftsman. If this is your calling, do remember to also invest in safety equipment like goggles and gloves. It only takes one accident with power tools to get yourself seriously injured, if you are not both careful and well protected.

You will find that a wide variety of maintenance and repair jobs will come your way as a homeowner. Sometimes they will be planned, like home improvement projects. Other times, they will be small emergencies that will pop up when you least expect it that will require your attention. All of these will be less stressful if you plan for them in advance. With just a little bit of experience to guide you and the right tools at your disposal, you will find that what can be accomplished will even surprise you. As a final word of advice, always get quality tools. There is nothing worse than being absolutely sure that you are prepared for any eventuality just to have cheap equipment break on you in the middle of a project. You always wind up paying one way or another.
