A Few Key Advantages of Knowing How to Waterproof a Basement

Posted by | Filed under Home Improvement | Dec 31, 2010 | 17 Comments

A damp basement is a horrible place and is basically unusable. You cannot build rooms in that area, because paneling and sheetrock will mildew and rot in the dampness, you would not want to put furniture there, because it would not be very long before it would be clammy and smelled awful, and you really cannot even keep anything there unless you don’t care how moldy it will start to smell. Waterproofing a basement is a good idea for a lot of reasons. Knowing how to waterproof a basement will not only give you lots of extra space for your family, but it will also add to the value of your , and make the environment in the entire home much better for all who reside there.

A lot of the reason cellars are wet is due to the fact they are underground, and the problem starts outside. Examine the foundations all the way around the house. Is the dirt surrounding them lower than the rest of the yard around it? That can occur over time as the dirt settles, and it’s one of the major causes when it comes to dampness in your basement. With the dirt sloping down towards your foundation, you are basically funneling water runoff directly to the house. Banking the soil all around the foundation high enough that the water will run away from your home instead will probably make a huge difference.

Some other causes of water in cellars aren’t quite as simple to correct. At times the water table under a property is way too high which can push water up into the basement through cracks and drains. You can minimize this matter by getting a sump pump installed in your basement floor. This is a pretty difficult job, because a hole needs to be cut directly into your floor so that a pit can be built in. You should also have some plumbing connections made in order to pump the water properly away, so this task will most likely call for professional assistance. However, the expense will be worth the effort, because it will mean that the usable space and the value of your home will increase.

As you probably already know, wetness causes mold and mildew. If your basement has a water problem, these unpleasant substances will take root and start spreading. They shoot spores into the air of your home which is then distributed into the upper level rooms as well as the basement. are allergic to mold spores, but even if nobody in your family has an allergy, you’re still asking for breathing troubles unless you clean the air in your home by drying out your basement. Learning how to waterproof a basement is an important skill for any homeowner to have. Having the right waterproofing basement products to use can save you lots of money as well.

Thought Of The Day

Executives in industries such as electronics biotechnology pharmaceuticals food processing and other fields should recognize that general industrial carbon steel tools introduce unacceptable risk of contamination from iron oxide (rust) and chrome particles.
An ordinary screwdriver or wrench is likely to undermine elaborate steps ensuring sterility and environmental integrity for sensitive production operations. Using appropriate hand tools to install and maintain sterile processing line machinery is an essential element of current good manufacturing practice in critical areas. Mechanics using standard shop floor pliers to repair stainless steel production apparatus subvert standard operating procedures to assure quality control and regulatory compliance.
This report summarizes risks from introducing general-purpose tools into aseptic or clean room settings and shows why professional-grade stainless steel maintenance tools are the accepted standard for industries that also include health care semiconductors chemicals aerospace avionics and nuclear energy.

Popular Questions

I want to learn carpentry. I work full-time and don’t have time during the day. Are there night schools/class
skills include tile drywall light framing for decks/canopy cabinets trim plumbing light electrical etc……

Our community colleges offer night and weekend classes in these areas. We also have low and no cost classes offered by our city’s recreational department. Some do have fees for materials but most of the classes I’ve taken cost around $20 and material fees do not exceed $40. These classes teach skills and give you the opportunity to put them to practice.

Also there are “contractors” schools that have classes on basic construction skills for the purpose of taking the contractor’s licensing test. The classes they offer include everything from painting drywall electrical and plumbing finish carpentry to name a few. I’m not certain whether these are hands-on classes however. I suggest you call some in your area to determine whether their classes will meet your needs. The contractor’s schools in our area offer “flexible class schedules” so maybe yours do too.

Finally both our Home Depot and Lowes offer Saturday classes where I’ve learned project specific skills like “installing a ceiling fan laying ceramic tile faux finishing framing and installation of a patio cover building a BBQ island basic woodworking molding trim and finish carpentry”. These are basic classes but they even let you use power tools and they are hands-on. Good luck!

That's really cool. When my nephew was little that was one of the first books he loved and would “read”

Thanks for the link. I know I'm not a daddy blogger, but if I had to, I think I could hold my own. My seven year old nephew and four year old neice have been with me for most of their lives so I know about staying up when they're sick, rushing to the emergency room with breathing troubles, the first day of school, sitting in the first row during my nephew's first Christmas program at school, first steps, first words, etc.

Originally it was “Life with Tony” but “my life as I see it” came about when my friend claimed he didn't scream like a girl when he got hit in the balls with a paint ball. I told him this was my blog with the stories as I remember them – for the record, he did scream like a girl

Dude, I like tough girls in black leather – what can I say?

Yeah, I'm in Australia, 18, and have been immunised to whopping cough. but for some reason i still have this. The doctor told me it was just Bronchitis and gave me 2 lots of anitbiotics for it. Instead, it hasn't helped and i've had this terrible cough since early april. It is now approaching june.

Its worse in the morning and night time when the air is cold and no matter how much i try to rug up and take care of myself, i get these terrible breathing troubles. what do i do? Go back to the doctor? They didn't listen to my worries in the first place…

Depending on yourself to make the decisions can really be upsetting and frustrating. It can take many people a long time to build a strong moral system. Frankly it takes more than just happening to happen.

The resource and planning issues are repeated themes from readers. Large prvanozatipn, including airpprt operators, have plans indicating what they can cope with and what they cannot, including estimates of impact on operations. Taxpayers, and to some extent airline passengers, have a right to onpw about risk management decisions being made that will affect them. For example, the City of Albuquerque routinely makes bidget plans for things as snow remo al hardware/labor, aircraft deicing equipment/fluid (via airport management operator), and storm water runoff capacity. In the past their approach meant citizen would have to wait for snow to melt or flood waters to subside to use roads. Voters delivered the message that this iresponsible approach was inaceptable and now such services have reached 20th century standards. Pressure can cause positive change.

A lovely post which was more about friends than wildflowers. Isn't it nice to travel the garden and find friends nearby? I used to pull up wildflowers too. I have since learned their value. On the Phlox divaricata, it can be really hard to establish. I have acidified my soil a bit with shredded leaves, and it seems to love it here now.~~Dee

Thanks Dee. So many of these wildflowers are not available for sale anywhere, passalongs is the only way to get them, making for a friendly trip down memory lane when that area is perused. As for the phlox, it grows rampantly just down the street from us in a shady yard with a little creek of storm water runoff. Guess we are too well drained for it, but a small clump has returned so there is hope. Glad you were able to get it going, it is so sweet, like you. :-)

    Hi Linda,

It's hard to say gallon wise exactly how much you should loose in a day. This will depend on the size pond you have. Most ponds experience a normal loss of a few inches of water due to evaporation depending on size, location, climate, and waterfall size. If your pond is at least 1500 gallons I would not be concerned with the amount of water loss. If your pond is only a few hundred gallons you may want to begin searching the following suggestions. If you have a water fall check for moist areas around sharp corners for possible water splashing, also check your plumbing connections to make sure they are secure. If all this checks out I would turn the pond off for 24 hrs or so and see if the pond level stops dropping once the plumbing stops running. If the water loss stops you know it is in the waterfall or plumbing somewhere. If it continues keep watching over the pond until the level stops dropping. The possible leak will be at the water line. Hope this helps you out.

For this year I wanted to have preferably one pilot meeting. And not too much except that giving the Hollydays.
Would be nice if you will participate next year.
The purpose is this: not all testers can afford going to expensive conferences. But giving presentations is a very important skill I believe. And its also an opportunity for that, in a safe environment.

nice tips. Moving is always a difficult job and when it comes suddenly it becomes more difficult. This is a good time to throw away your garbage that you are taking care of and that you don't need any more. My advice is to hire professional movers because it will lighten your burden. When i moved i also hired movers called Box which made my moves a memorable experience. Specially when moving in short period these professionals feel like God's gift.

These poor, poor women. To have your foot mutilated in such a way is painful and so extremely harmful. I was so incredibly bothered by this post that I took an interest in this subject. I saw that Grace had did the same thing, and we shared our opinions on this. These women have to go through the intense pain of getting their feet soaked in unpleasant substances, their feet broken and reshaped. This look among these women is something that is desired. It is a signal of beauty, and it to have these kind of feet is sexy. Men find this more attractive in women, and men control the society in which these women live in. It is so sad to think that men can control the lives of these women to such an extent. These poor women have to have their feet morphed into odd shapes, bearing extreme pain for the sole purpose of pleasing men. Drastically changing women's bodies does not only happen in a few societies, it literally happens in every society. Somehow or some way, women are either forced or they feel it necessary to change their bodies, and it really is a very sad reality.
