Well, sounds reasonable, but makes distribution of OSS significantly more difficult. Also, why would you require a secret (password-like) API key for a public API, when the user is already authenticated with his personal credentials. Web browsers don’t use secret API keys, too. I understand that someone who stolen a large number of Facebook accounts can use them to distribute spam slightly more easily via an API then via web interface, but isn’t this merely a technicality? BTW: Stealing the API key from a compiled binary shouldn’t be too hard either.
