Refinishing Basements Is Really A Win-Win Home Improvement Project!

Posted by | Filed under Home Improvement | Jan 10, 2011 | 16 Comments

Many people buy their own homes soon after they get married. They purchase them thinking that they’re far more spacious than anything they’ll ever need. However, over the years, things change. The couple adds more possessions, kids are born, and the house just seems to be straining at the seams to hold it all. This is how the dilemma will start. Should we buy a new house, though we like the one we are in, or maybe should we find an alternative? As people start thinking about expansion, refinishing basements gets to be an integral consideration. In fact, this method won’t require moving, however it’ll make use of extra room in the house you currently own.

Infants do not require much space. They can crawl all over in a few rooms and be perfectly content. As they start maturing, though, their play gets to be more active, and so they need room to run about and let off steam. During the warm months it’s easy just to send them outdoors. During the cold months, though, when they’re much more limited to your house, you need room for them to have fun. Nothing could be much more perfect than having a few basement refinishing ideas and turning your basement directly into a good entertainment area that can be used by the whole household. Performing a basement remodel is going to be a far less costly way to get the needed space while not having to pay moving expenses or perhaps build an add-on onto your house.

In case you never have children, your own personal interests will expand over the years, plus your friendship base will grow to the point where you’ll want to entertain more than just a couple of people. Creating a good entertainment area within your basement is another great reason for doing a bit of remodeling. Perhaps you’ll want to add a bar, a discussion area, a pool table, along with any of the other add-ons which make for successful entertaining.

When all is said and done, you can’t lose by refinishing your own basement. You will get an added living space for all your years that you reside in your home, and in case you ever attempt to sell, the resale worth may be as much as 30% more simply because you have added a lot of extra square feet to the house.

Thought Of The Day

Even in this modern day some basic hand tools are still very must for sheet metal work no matter a small metal shop or a large one. You should purchase your own set of hand tools and practice using them until you are very proficient. Once you reach that point metal fabrication work can be a very satisfying and productive work!

    4. Do you learn anything new about Dietrich Bonhoeffer?

    If yes, what?
I did not know, or had forgotten, that DB came to New York and then turned around to rejoin his people, leading directly to his death. Powerful. That DB was perhaps the first to be silenced by the regime when his radio broadcast was cut off. That resistence was much earlier in the Third Reich than I realized.

    5. What were the strengths of this blog?
Clear, helpful, wonderfully organized. Of benefit to preachers, students in seminary or Bible college, and lay people wanting to learn from DB.

    6. What were the weaknesses of this blog?
I will send via email a few typos. I wonder if you want to go farther in the Application of chapters 5 & 6. For example, you quote Piper on the Proverb with regard to abortion…what would DB say about this today? Would he preach courageously against abortion? Would he say that the blood of millions of infants is on the hands of the church today? If in Canada, would DB preach courageously against gay marriage, even if it meant going to jail for doing so? Would he preach in the American pulpit against materialism, to people with 3 cars, two homes, and home theatres in their finished basements? And as for chapter 6, what would DB say about reaching the unreached tribes today, especially among the muslims? Would he call the church to die for the sake of Christ in taking the good news to the islamist world? to the world of HIV/AIDS sufferers?

    7. What would you suggest to make this blog more helpful?
In future posts, should you choose to continue, you could have some dialogues with prominent preachers over your 6 points, preachers such as Piper, your professor Dr. Robinson, Erwin Lutzer, Warren Wiersbe, etc. Also, DB scholars. It could be really fascinating. On the point above about the application of chapter 5, for example, it would be great to read what Piper thinks about parallels between preaching against the Third Reich in Germany in 1939 and preaching against abortion in America today.

Tremendous. Terrific. I hope to see this in print some day soon. Dr. Galloway!!! Wow, that will be something! Dr. Galloway, published author! You could then write another book on the significance of Tom Osborne's coaching philosophy for preaching in 21st century Nebraska.

Middle class home repair incident: On the blog More Than Just a Mother I read of a mom who reviewed the “hexbug” and it cost her 150 when the little bastard immediately went up the line to her gas fireplace. So I got some as stocking stuffers. While these gifts are opened by the group, and as I am telling this story to my husband and rather doofy stepsons they all set their bugs a-buzzin and the husband’s hexbug goes right down the air intake of the central heating system. While I was telling him the story of why I bought the toys. We heard it for a few days, figure eventually he’ll hit the filter.

My first suggestion to you is that you need to be more specific. What are the holes from? Is it plywood, subflooring, individual wood planks? You need to edit your question and add more information, so that you get more and better answers.

Hello, I'm the author of a new book, Our Appliances: Home Improvement Repair, which I thought would be of interest to your blogging community. Tuesday: Busy.Glee against Last Man Standing. New Girl and Raising Hope in half hour slots against Ringer. And later in the season Cougar Town and Apt 23 add to the night’s schedule. But I’ll watch all of it, give up whatever doesn’t impress me (I’ll never give up CT or RH), and probably watch a lot online. I’ll have to DVR LMS and RH because I’m not the only one here who will watch them. Hubby said apparently not many women enjoyed “Home Improvement” – they didn’t like Tim Allen? I always liked him….the whole macho man thing was an ongoing comedy bit with his standup, just carried over to his hit series. We both liked HI and will watch LMS, at least long enough to decide if it’s good or not.

Although I agree with you on principal, there are *a lot* of people who should **never** do home repair projects on their own. Our home’s previous owner must have fancied himself a pretty good DIYer, and I’ve spent a lot of time refixing things when his projects/repairs ended up failing. He apparently couldn’t find a properly-sized drain tube for the kitchen sink, so he bought an extendo-tube, ran it from the disposal to the wall drain hole, and set it in there. Set, not seal. It was just sitting in there, until it popped loose and we discovered the problem.

I know this is an old post, but I’m going to reply anyway. I teach needleplay and the like in the scene and I’ve come across this practice more than once. If you want to experiment with stapling, GET A DISPOSABLE SURGICAL STAPLER. They are cheap, incredibly easy to use, quite safe (get a remover too or you’ll be in trouble), and use staples designed for the human body. The office supply or home improvement staples have glue and oils on them that you don’t want in your body. Dottie/Slutress has a good stapling 101 video on KinkAcademy.com

Thank you for speaking out for all those who are struggling to survive in this country. Income disparity should be constantly discussed by ourso-called media and pundit types, but what we see instead is constant coverage of the ridiculous in the name of news. If an alien looked at our media, they would assume that we were all living the life of millionaires, flying around in our corporate jets and throwing cash atTiffany’s. But the reality is that most of us, myself included, struggle paycheck to paycheck(if we’re lucky enough to have a job) andwe never know when something like a major car repair, or home repair, orhealth issue, will make us the one that the wolves pull down.Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and the rest of them are soignorant of the suffering out here that they need a dose of reality.Maybe if they dropped off in Cleveland, or Detroit, or New Orleans, andleft without money or connections, they would understand how hard it isto find a job in this economy that actually pays for rent, food, health care, etc. But, instead, most of them have been in the political jobs they’ve had for years, that they bought with their fortunes they inherited.
