What Small Holes Mean In Leaking Tanks

One can do many things when trying to patch a small leak in a water tank, trough, or any other large metal container. Actually this method comes recommended by the US Department of Agriculture and has the advantage of being cold. In this way you don’t have to weld, solder or do anything else with heated materials. It is important that you have a drill, a toggle fastener and bolt, a rubber gasket and a brass washer.

Be sure you are aware that this usually won’t work on a seam. Consequently, this is not meant as a permanent repair. Having just a small hole in the tank means that the whole tank wall is weakening and you’ll probably have to replace the tank soon. You’ll learn more about when you visit rain water tank.

Always note you have to drain the tank before starting. Then remember to remove any rust around the offending hole, either with a chemical rust remover or with sandpaper. Next, consult with a good hardware man.

Usually you will find it hard to look for all the things you need in a large store by yourself. One thing you want to get is a small toggle fastener, the smaller the better. The kind you want is something like a winged affair with a hinged joint in the middle that allows you to fold it together.

You put the fastener on the end of a bolt, fold the wings of the fastener, then shove the bolt end and the folded fastener through the hole in the side of the tank, where the fastener wings expand and give the bolt gripping power. Smaller homes will be easier to drill and cover which is really better. One thing you can do is to find a brass bolt to go with the toggle fastener, because brass doesn’t rust. One other thing you need is a rubber washer or gasket two or three times as wide as the hole of the tank, plus a brass washer about the same size or slightly smaller. It is important to note that these should have holes in the middle not much bigger around than the bolt that will go through them. Always know that when the fit is not good, you’ll just have another leak to contend with.

In case you cannot find anything, you may be able to use solid pieces of rubber and metal and drill your own boles in the middle. With the tank, enlarge the leaking hole in the side of the tank with your drill, just large enough to slip the folded toggle fastener through to the other side. Remember that if you want more durability, you have to smear the area around the drilled hole with rubber cement and let the glue dry. In this case assemble your bolt with the brass washer outermost, then the rubber gasket, then the toggle fastener. If the bolt is headless use a square or hexagonal nut

Be sure to Smear the back side of the rubber gasket with rubber glue and let dry. Remember that when the glue at the back of the gasket meets the glue on the side of the tank, the two faces will bond to a certain extent. Slip the folded toggle fastener through the hole in the tank and tighten the bold head or nut with a wrench. Doing so will now give you a usable tank.

Find out if there are any business groups in your area who trade referrals. I am in one group and we have representatives from a lot of diffferent industries (e.g. real estate tile & granite insurance web design etc) and at the end of each meeting we trade referrals. Basically if I know a person who is looking for home improvement or if the realtor in the group knows a home owner who needs work you would get their name and contact info so you can get the business. It has been great for me and most the members of our group see a significant imporvement in business. We did have a landscape person who eventually had to stop coming because he was too busy!!

You may also want to see about local chamber of commerce events like business after hours etc. It is a lot of work but referrals are worth their weight in gold!!!

Beautiful! I especially love the top photo. My partner and I have been developing a new line of home accessories based on the ornaments on 19th century buildings in our neighborhood, which we're reconfiguring into mix-and-match patterns, so I've been busily absorbing that kind of work lately. Your post is so inspiring!

We have rain water tanks, two, that are just used for the garden. Our sprinkler system is connected to it. We also connect a pipe to the washing machine and use the grey water on the garden. We are also flooding, and our tanks have been overflowing for weeks. Only months ago we were down to using buckets to water the garden…as they say in Australia, every drought is ended by the flood, and we are so flooding right now. Enough.

That's fair; the point, though, is that Brown was to a certain extent “personal moralizing” in the sense that it went in contravention of settled public opinion of what the Constitution meant. Avoiding moralizing against their interests is what Palin & co. really mean, and it's just a way of making a political agenda seem intellectually appealing when it really isn't.

Geoff – its a low-trail porteur fork meant for heavy loads. I just put a second bolt at the end of the fork crown attachment point just in case!

Ron – We took it slow… and the Pass & Stow is really solid. I kept most of the weight in the panniers (milk, etc) and the lighter stuff in the Sackville shopper on the top. But I was just careful, and it rode great.

We have pumpkins left in our garden (butternut too) and some silver beet that has seen better days as well as the capsicums that are producing a lot at the moment. Apparently these pumpkins aren't any good for using in cakes, do you know if this is correct? We have had a little rain, but not very much which is disappointing as we need our rain water tanks topped up, so we can run the house on it. It rained heaps while we were at Port Lincoln, typical.Sorry I haven't been by your blog for a while, I have too many that I read, and I should probably thin some of them out as I don't always get the time. God Bless,Tania]]>
